Jail Hill Inn

We stayed in Suite 201 this time and loved the way it was decorated for Christmas. The room was spacious enough to have friends staying in another suite come and enjoy our appetizer trays and play games in our room. The attention to detail is, as always, impeccable. Everything you could possibly need/want is already there waiting for you, from bath salts for the giant spa tub to wipes to remove your make-up. The bathroom truly feels like a spa. The appetizer trays are tasty and a perfect start to the evening. Matthew was even able to accommodate those of us who do not really drink. Breakfast is truly an experience. The food is always fresh and seasonal and with 3 courses, always enough that we end up not needing to eat lunch. We have been coming to Jail Hill since 2017 and it looks as pristine as it did then. You can tell Matthew cares about putting money back into the Inn and maintaining its beauty. Things are replaced when needed and nothing ever looks worn or tired. We come to Gelena specifically for the experience of staying at Jail Hill Inn.

This was our second stay at Jail Hill Inn and it will not be our last! We're in love with this luxury B & B! Matthew Carroll the Innkeeper does everything right! His attention to detail, hard work and natural gift for hospitality is why Jail Hill Inn is exceptional. We stayed in a different suite this time (we're going to try being "repeat offenders" and stay in all 6 suites) and it was beautiful! The suite and the entire Inn was decorated for Fall...little autumn touches everywhere. The Inn itself is immaculate and very comfortable but what makes your stay special at Jail Hill Inn are the breakfasts and "snack trays". Every morning you start your day with a 3 course breakfast! Most normal humans would be quite content to enjoy one course of Matthew's breakfasts! Be prepared to never need to eat lunch while staying at Jail Hill Inn...you won't be hungry until the evening and that's when Matthew serves you a snack try consisting of fruit, crackers and cheese, savory mini bites, cookies, nuts and a bottle of wine or sparking juice! You can save it for a late night snack or enjoy it right away...one evening we sat on the deck enjoying our goodies in the crisp autumn air...it was perfect! We've told all of our family and friends about Jail Hill Inn and hope someday they can experience a wonderful getaway to Galena while staying at Jail Hill Inn. Thank you Matthew! Until next time!

My husband and I stayed a few weeks ago and I still find myself reflecting on our great experience at Jail Hill Inn. There’s no question why this is among the top-rated bed and breakfasts in the US and world. Matthew’s attention to every detail is unparalleled. From the room appointments to the food to the suggested activities and hospitality, everything is exquisite. The rooms: Absolutely beautiful. We stayed in 202 with the curved brick ceilings and high windows. The restoration of this room, and the entire property, is outstanding and was really done with the guest experience in mind. Everything is top-of-the-line, and the local sourcing of furniture and toiletries is a very nice touch. It’s clear Matthew cares not only for the Jail Hill Inn, but for the economic vitality of the entire community. The real, daily flowers in the room were the icing on top of the cake. The food: Incredible. We had dinner reservations within walking distance downtown but found the three-course breakfast and wine and cheese tray the best food of the weekend. We had dietary restrictions that were carefully considered and did not feel they compromised any aspect of our culinary experience. The hospitality: Unmatched. Matthew embodies hospitality and his compassion for guests shows in everything he does and is personified by the inn. The questionnaire we filled out ahead of our stay was clearly read and internalized, and as a result we felt completely heard, seen, and welcomed. The location: Excellent! Perched on a hill with great views while still within walking distance (1.5 blocks) of downtown. Parking is available right out front. Overall, we loved our stay and look forward to returning again next fall!

November 2023 The Jail Hill Inn is exquisitely decorated. You notice the attention to detail immediately as you enter. The owner Matthew makes you feel so welcome. The suites are very nice and relaxing. The views from your suites looking out over Galena are beautiful. My wife and I also look forward to the gourmet 3 course breakfast. They are exceptional. The afternoon wine and charcuterie board are a wonderful finish to the day after exploring around Galena. The wildlife my wife and I saw in the backyard of the Inn just were an added bonus to our day. I would tell anyone thinking about staying at The Jail Hill Inn to do it. You won't be disappointed you'll leave completely relaxed and wanting to go back.
